Hello Fans, Friends and Family

April 1st, 2010,  We are almost to Davenport just north of Santa Cruz.  Judy wanted to stop here because of good cell service and I was just as happy to stop as the headwinds had really picked up.  About half way into my ride I was met by four cyclist from the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club.  Tony R., Tony O., Brian and Jim.  Tony R. had contacted me yesterday saying they would like to ride with me for a while.  They took me off the path I had originally mapped out.  I am sure it added a few miles but I am also sure it added to a lot more enjoyable ride.  We rode through miles and miles of strawberry fields.  They have a ride called “Strawberry Fields Forever”.   I’m sure this must have been part of that ride.  I asked if they had to pay royalties on that name (lol).  Went past Santa Cruz Boardwalk where they had an amusement park.  Saw a lot of beautiful ocean including a famous surf area.  Took a break along the way where there was an old ship made out of concrete.  It was built in the 1930’s when there was a shortage of steel.  Since then it has been used as a dance hall & casino but is now pretty well beaten up.  The last rider stayed with me until I arrived at Wilder Ranch Interpretive Center just north of Santa Cruz.  Judy was waiting for me there.  I stopped for a short break before continuing on.  About 4 or 5 more miles and Judy was parked on the side of the road again.  She said she would just like to stay there because she finally got good reception on her cell phone.  I was happy to stop also as the the little bit of rain we had was gone but the headwinds had picked up tremendously.  On our left we have a beautiful view of the ocean and on the right we have lush green pastures with cows grazing on the side of the hills.  The end of todays ride gave me 63 miles bringing my 6 day total riding mileage to 456 miles.  Til next time…Saving Lives One Mile at a Time – – – Wes & Judy

Sounds like you had a really great day. Adding a few riding companions with local knowledge makes a world of difference, even if you’re riding along the most beautiful coastline in the country. However, I can’t believe you slacked off just because of a little wind and a few rain drops. (LOL). Say hi to Judy for us and may the winds tomorrow be at your back.

Actually we are on schedule as Judy wants to wait for the weekend to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Finished my 1st 7 days with 498 miles. Shoulda pedaled just a little farther to make 500! Oh well…maybe I can make it up next week. 😀

Wes–Great going–You have covered in the first 6 days about what we did in Nebraska-BRAN–but it sounds as if the terrain and conditions were a little tougher!!!
Keep it up as long as it is fun and I enjoy your GPS and Blogs–
    Happy pedaling!!!
