Trip to Nebraska #2

June 20, 2011

Monday, 20 June 2011:  Continuing our trip to Nebraska.  We have been passing quite a few cyclists along the way.  We started seeing them in Arizona and continued seeing them well into Colorado.  I took a couple of pictures of one cyclist just before arriving at the top of a long climb.  They are doing the Race Across America which started in San Diego, California and are trying to make it to Washington DC in about 10 days.  I am more of a tourist at heart.  I would rather take my time and enjoy the scenery and the ride.  We also passed a lot of metal art displayed on hill tops and other areas along the way.  We arrived in Callaway, Nebraska Sunday evening and were welcomed by a thunderstorm that lit up the night sky.  We will be here for about a week to celebrate the annual alumni and other festivities that will be taking place this coming weekend.

Trip to Nebraska #1

June 18, 2011

Friday, 17 Jun 2011:  Began our trip Wednesday morning from Seal Beach, CA.  Our first stop was at the Hoover Dam.  We took a tour of the inside of the dam and saw some of the details of how it works.  Afterwards we found some cozy cabins in Meadview, AZ where we spent the night.  Today we went to the Grand Canyon and took a walk on the glass platform that extends 70 feet over the edge of the canyon at Eagle Point.  On the way to our next stop we visited an area where there were imprints of dinosaur tracks in the ground.  Pretty cool!  We then stopped at Tuba City where we will spend the night.  When we got there the car was overheating and we thought something was wrong with the radiator or water pump.  It wasn’t until the next day when we were able to get the car towed to a repair shop to check it out.  We were very relieved to find out that it was nothing more than a bad fuse.  We got a later start today than we had hoped, but made a stop at Four Corners in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona all at once.  We continued from there to our final stop for the day in Durango, Colorado.  Below are some pictures of our Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon adventures:

Tuesday, 14 Jun 2011:  Today is the last day I will get a chance to ride in SoCal.  I rode up the San Gabriel River Bike Trail to meet some friends.  We all rode down the coast to Main Street, Huntington Beach for a quick snack and then back up the coast to finish.  Tomorrow we take off on a road trip with a destination of Calloway, Nebraska with a few stops along the way.  I will be taking my bike along to get some riding in and our grandson TY will also come along with us on the trip.  He will bring his bike and get some riding in with his grandpa.  You can view the details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

Santa Monica Pier to meet “Chuck Walking”

June 12, 2011

Sunday, 12 June 2011:  Started my ride in Torrance and rode down to Hermosa Beach, following the coastline unitl I got to the Santa Monica Pier.  I then rode to Douglas Park where I met “Chuck Walking”.  From there he is walking the last 2 1/2 miles to the pier to finish a 3200+ mile walk from Washington DC.  His walk is to raise money and awareness for ALS.  I first met Chuck last summer while cycling through Illinois.  He gave me some good information on the roads that lay ahead.  I have been following his Face Book group ever since.  He is a real inspiration.  I walked along with him to the finish line at the Santa Monica Pier and after a little bit of socializing, I got on my bike and returned to my start point in Torrance.  You can view the details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below.  Just remember that about 2 1/2 miles of today’s ride were at a walking pace which will be reflected in my stats:

Saturday, 11 June 2011:  Met with a group of riders from the “B” group of my bike club.  Had a nice cool ride to Hennessey’s Tavern in Redondo Beach for breakfast.  The ride was very enjoyable, but I think we spent too much time at the restaurant.  There was cloud cover for just about the entire ride which blocked the sun but kept everyone cool.  Tomorrow I will take a solo ride to Santa Monica Pier to meet with “Chuck Walking” who will be finishing a walk for ALS from Washington DC to Santa Monica.  Last time I saw him was in Illinois while doing my bike ride around the U.S.  You can view details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below.

A Tale of 2 Rivers by WildWes49

June 11, 2011

Friday, 10 Jun, 2011:  We arrived in Seal Beach, CA yesterday afternoon.  We got all unpacked and it wasn’t long before I made the decision to join some friends on a bike ride this morning.  I rode to the cross-over bridge on the San Gabriel River Trail where I met 7 of my cycling buddies.  We rode back down to the coast in Seal Beach where 2 of the riders stopped off before heading back.  The rest of us continued down the coast until we arrived at Park Pantry restaurant for a quick meal break.  After our meal 2 more riders decided they were going to head back.  At this point I had only gone about 15 miles so I wasn’t ready to give up so easily.  The rest of us continued down the coast until we arrived at the L.A. River Trail and headed north.  When we got to Downey, another rider broke off and headed home.  There are now just 3 of us left and we continued north until we got to Montebello.  We headed back to the Rio Hondo which hooked up with the San Gabriel River.  We all 3 continued to Liberty Park in Cerritos where the other 2 riders left my company.  As I was getting ready to resume my ride I met another cyclist who rode with me the rest of the way to Seal Beach.  It was a nice cool day, with no sun and almost no wind.  Just a nice ride with some good friends.  I have a picture of part of the trail along the Rio Hondo.  Below the picture is a link showing the details of today’s ride.

Weed Time

June 4, 2011

Saturday, June 4th, 2011:  Today my plan was to do some ab workout.  However… my wife had another idea.  She thought it might be a good idea to spend my time outside pulling weeds.  I guess that is another sort of exercise though.  A lot of bending over and twisting side to side.  A couple of hours of that is quite a workout.  Didn’t quite get it done though… save some for another day.  Maybe an hour or so each day until it is finished.

Gamebird Run #2 by wildwes49

June 3, 2011

Friday, June 3rd, 2011:  On Monday, we headed back to Pahrump, Nevada, where we will stay the next couple of weeks as we get ready for a trip to Nebraska for Judy’s Annual Alumni.  Tuesday and Wednesday we just stayed around the house and relaxed.  Yesterday I got out my weights for a little workout.  It has been awhile since I’ve done that and I certainly felt it this morning.  Never-the-less, I decided to take a ride around the town as the weather was nice and very little wind.  While on my ride, I stopped by the only bicycle shop in Pahrump just to check it out.  While I was there I met another cyclist who is planning on doing a short ride on Sunday.  It is nice to know there are other cyclists in town.  I gave him my email address and will join up with him if he contacts me.  You can see the details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below.
