Mountain Springs – Up & Over & Back (Almost) by wildwes49

July 24, 2011

Saturday, 23 July 2011:  Started my ride at 7:30 this morning but I think maybe I should have started earlier like about 5:30!  Today’s ride started at Simkins & Highway 160.  I took Highway 160 south for 37 miles arriving at Mountain Springs Summit.  It was then another 10 miles downhill to a convenience store at the Blue Diamond turnoff.  I stayed there for awhile to rest up for the remainder of my ride.  Coming over the hill and now at the convenience store the temperature got up to almost 115 degrees.  In fact I think most of the ride was over 100 degrees.  Heading back up the hill I could tell that my energy had been sapped by the heat.  I had to stop a few times on the way up and when I was about 2 miles from the top I decided I needed to get off the bike and do a little cross-training, so I walked the rest of the way to the top.  During my walk I gave my wife a call to let her know I was done and to come pick me up.  I didn’t want to become a heat casualty.  I finally got to the top, got back on my bike and started on my way back down.  About 6 miles down the hill, my wife arrived and I put my bike in the car and we headed home.  We stopped at Sonic on the way home and picked up a bite to eat and a 44 oz  fruit slushie.  That was quite refreshing.  The total ride was 63.1 miles with 5,272 feet of elevation gain and an average speed of 10 mph including the 2 miles of walking.  You can view the GPS stats of todays ride by clicking on the link below:

Harry’s Grill – Sunset Beach by wildwes49

July 18, 2011

Sunday. 17 July 2011:  Today’s ride consisted of 11 riders, some who had not been on a bike for awhile.  We took a short, easy ride from Liberty Park in Cerritos to Harry’s Grill in Sunset Beach for breakfast.   This was basically a flat ride with only 233 feet of elevation gain.  I stayed with the slowest riders to make sure they made it okay and to give myself more time in the saddle.  I made the best of the slow pace, enjoying the scenery and conversing with the fellow riders along the way.  Harry’s always has great food with good prices.  Tomorrow my wife and I will drive home to Pahrump, NV for a few weeks and then will return back to SoCal again for another few weeks.  You can view the stats of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

Best of Brea by wildwes49

July 17, 2011

Saturday, 16 July 2011:  Today’s ride consisted of 17 riders including myself.  It was a nice ride with good weather and beautiful scenery.  We rode through a lot of areas with plenty of trees and vegetation, around a peaceful lake and past some very nice homes.  We had breakfast at a local grill (Best of Brea) which had plenty of seating for all of us and very good food also.  Our total elevation gain today was about 1200 feet.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the route.  It is also one of my favorites.  You can view the GPS stats of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

New Palos Verdes Tour (Short) by wildwes49

July 15, 2011

Friday, 15 July 2011:  My friend Eric rode with me on today’s ride.  We began our ride at 6:15AM.  After about 8 miles Eric took off his jacket that I tried to talk him out of wearing.  He hasn’t ridden hills for some time now but I think he did very well on the hills.  We rode 27.72 miles with a moving time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds. That is an average moving speed of 12.2 mph.  The total elevation gain was 2700 feet so this was no easy task.  When we finished the ride he said he enjoyed it and thought that it really wasn’t too bad.  That’s easy to say when the ride is all over.  You can click on the link below to view the GPS stats of today’s ride.

Palos Verdes Loop (Short) by wildwes49

July 14, 2011

Thursday, 14 July 2011:  Today’s ride was shorter and easier than the New Palos Verdes Tour I did a couple of days ago.  The climbs were not as extreme and there were not as many twists and turns along the way.  It was cool this morning and became a bit misty toward the end of the ride.  On one portion of the ride I had to brake going downhill due to slower vehicles in front of me.  At least I didn’t have to stay in the bike lane as I was going just as fast as the cars.  Tomorrow I am planning a 6:AM ride with a friend and will be doing the New Palos Verdes Tour from Hawthorne & PV West again.  I just received an invite to go on a birthday ride some other friends tomorrow morning.  I would like to do both rides but will depend on what time the birthday ride begins.  You can view the GPS details of todays ride by clicking on the link below:

Whittier Loop by wildwes49

July 14, 2011

Wednesday, 13 July 2011:  Today’s ride was about a dozen of us doing a short 26 mile ride from Cerritos to Whitter for breakfast.  It was a no stress, casual, social ride on mostly flat roads.  One new rider, still learning the ins and outs of riding in a group.  He gets a lot of good advice and opinions from the other riders.  He has only been cycling about 3 months but he seems like he will be a good rider soon.  Details of todays ride can be found by clicking on the link below:

July 12, 2011

Tuesday, 12 July 2011:  Took another ride around Palos Verdes.  This time I started from Hawthorne and Palos Verdes West.  The purpose of today’s ride was to get the exact mileage between turns.  It was a cool day and I still sweated!  I think the 2nd half of the ride has tougher climbs than the first half.  The good thing is you finish on a downhill!  Here is a copy of the turn by turn directions followed by my GPS stats of todays ride that you can click on to view.

Balboa with Ferry Ride by wildwes49

July 11, 2011

Sunday, 10 July 2011:  Today’s ride started at Liberty Park in Cerritos.  I decided to ride with the Cerritos Cyclepaths down the coast to Balboa Island.  We crossed the bay on a Ferry and stopped for a snack at PCH before heading back up the coast back to Liberty Park.  It was a cool day and we rode at a nice pace.  My Garmin computer acted up a couple of times and I lost about 5 miles worth of mileage on it.  It was good I had my other computer with me to get my actual mileage.  My mileage was actually49.8 miles in 3 hours, 19 minutes and 32 seconds.  Average moving speed was 14.9 mph.  You can see the recorded Garmin stats by clicking on the link below.  After that you can check out a few pictures I took on the ferry and in Balboa.

Irvine Park Ride by wildwes49

July 10, 2011

Saturday, 9 July 2011:  Today, eleven of us rode from Liberty Park in Cerritos to Irvine Park in Irvine.  One rider had 2 flats in the first 10 miles but we found the cause the second time, so no more flats.  After circling Irvine Park, we stopped for lunch at John’s Restaurant before heading back to Liberty Park.  I rode sweep most of the ride.  It was a nice easy ride with good friends.  You can view details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

New Palos Verdes Tour (Revised-Short) by wildwes49

July 6, 2011

Wednesday, 6 July, 2011:  I was hoping to entice someone to ride with me today around Palos Verdes.  I had 2 people respond, but all opted out at the last moment.  Never-the-less, I rode the 3.5 miles to Hawthorne & PV West to see if anyone would actually show up.  When I found no one there, I headed west on PV South to commence my counter-clockwise tour of Palos Verdes.  There were a lot of hills, but not really as bad as I had expected.  My total elevation gain for the day was 3,373 feet.  Not all at once though, there were a lot of nice downhills also to help break up the climbs.  The weather was very nice, but I did, however, break a good sweat going up some of those hills.  The tour ended back at Hawthorne & PV West and I continued on PV South, arriving at my starting point with 35 miles.  You can click on the link below to view the stats of today’s ride.  Below that are a few pictures I took along the way.
