Newport Coast Dr with “A” Riders by wildwes49

August 27, 2011

Saturday, 27 August 2011:  Today I met with 6 other riders from the “A” group of our club.  We rode down the coast to Newport Coast Drive then had a nice climb to the top.  We then had a nice downhill ride to Backbay where we enjoyed a very scenic ride before stopping for a quick bite to eat.  After our snack we continued our ride up the coast and back to our starting points.  It was a very warm day, but the ocean breeze made it a nice ride.  I  enjoyed riding with the “A” group for a change.  It gave me a chance to stretch my legs.  Tonight I will be heading back home to Nevada.  I will be looking forward to returning to SoCal to do some more good riding.  You can view the stats of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

Bike Ride to Eggs Etc

August 24, 2011

Wednesday, 24 August 2011:  Today I rode to Liberty Park and met with 3 other cyclists for a leisurely ride along Del Amo Blvd to the Los Angeles River Bike Trail.  We followed the bike trail south all the way to the end and then rode along the coast to Junipero Rd to 6th St for breakfast at Eggs Etc in Long Beach.  My wife Judy drove down to have breakfast with us and arrived at the same time as us.  After breakfast we continued our leisurely ride until we got to the San Gabriel River Bike Trail which we took back to our starting point.  You can view the stats of todays ride by clicking on the link below:

Sugar Shack, Huntington Beach by wildwes49

August 23, 2011

Tuesday, 23 August 2011:  After yesterdays good ride I decided to join the regular Tuesday group to Sugar Shack in Huntington Beach for breakfast.  When I got to the starting point I was joined by 2 other cyclists.  We held a nice pace for most of the ride down the river trail and along the coast to Huntington Beach.  The air was a lot clearer than it has been for some time.  On the way back we took the same route back to our starting points.  It was a nice ride with good friends on a beautiful morning.  You can see the stats for today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

East Fork Rd & Glendora Mountain Rd by wildwes49

August 23, 2011

Monday, 22 August 2011:

Today I met with a friend, Marek, at his house in Whittier.  We rode up the San Gabriel River Bike Trail to the Santa Fe Dam, continued north on San Gabriel Canyon Rd to East Fork Rd. We then followed East Fork Rd to Glendora Mtn Rd and continued until we were able to follow a portion of Route 66 before returning to his house via the San Gabriel River Trail.  It has been quite some time since I have done a ride like this and I really enjoyed it.  I Think I Love This Ride!  You can click on the link below to view the stats of this ride.  You can also see pictures taken on this ride below the link.

New Whittier Bike Trail by wildwes49

August 21, 2011

Sunday, 21 August 2011:  This morning my grandson Ty and I rode 3 miles to Liberty Park to meet up with my bike club.  Only one other rider showed up this morning, so it was just the 3 of us.  We headed north on the San Gabriel River Trail about 12 miles and exited to the right on San Gabriel River Pkwy.  We turned right on Rose Hills, Workman Mills and Pioneer until we arrived at the New Whittier Bike Trail.  We then turned left and followed the bike trail about 1.3 miles, turned right on Magnolia, crossed Hadley and into the shopping center.  We rode through the shopping center to the traffic signal and continued on Sorenson Ave.  At Lambert we made a quick right/left turn to continue on Sorenson to Washington for our breakfast stop at Hacienda San Isidro Grill.  It was closed and was re-opening soon as a new restaurant.  None of us were really interested in finding a new place to eat today so we continued on Sorenson.  Soon the other rider turned off to head home as she was close to her home where she started from.  We continued our ride turning right on Burke, left on Dice, right on Los Nietos, left on Pioneer and right on Mersin until we arrived at the San Gabriel River Trail again.  We headed south until we got to the Excelsior exit and returned to our starting point.  Just before we exited the river trail I met another rider from my club.  He told me he was doing a longer ride tomorrow that I might be interested in.  I will meet him at his place in the morning for an early start at 6AM.  To view the details of today’s ride, you can click on the link below:

Pete’s Burger Ride by wildwes49

August 20, 2011

Saturday, 20 August 2011:  This morning I rode to Liberty Park to meet with the club members for our ride.  No riders were there that wanted to ride the “B” ride so I decided to join with the 13 other riders for the “C” ride.  It was a nice, short, 25 mile loop for breakfast at Pete’s Burger.  I did not enjoy this ride as much as I would have liked.  I was prepared for a longer 50+ mile ride with hills.  I guess I will have to start riding my own rides during the weekdays so I can get longer, faster and harder rides.  Today’s stats are not that impressive, but you can click on the link below to view them.

South Bay Mall in Carson to Venice Beach by wildwes49

August 18, 2011

Wednesday, 17 August 2011:  Today I put my bike in my car and drove to the South Bay Mall in Carson where I met with 6 other cyclists for a slow, sight-seeing ride to Venice Beach for breakfast.  It was another cool day with heavy overcast.  It was still a nice ride with a lot of interesting things to see.  After the ride I forgot to turn off my Garmin Computer so I have a few extra miles that should not be counted.  My actual mileage for today was 49.8 miles with a riding time of 4 hrs 25 min giving me an average of 11.3 mph.  You can see on the graph in my stats where I forgot to turn my computer off as my speed drastically increased.  Click on the link below to view todays stats.

Sugar Shack, Huntington Beach by wildwes49

August 16, 2011

Wednesday, 16 August 2011:  Started today’s ride from Norwalk, CA and in just over a mile I started hearing a noise with each rotation of my wheel.  My first thought was that I had a broken spoke.  I have never broke a spoke before, and when I checked them I found that I still did not have a broken spoke.  I then rotated my wheel and found that a 2 in nail was sticking in my rear tire.  I removed the nail, repaired the flat and continued on my ride until I met with four of my cycling friends at the cross-over bridge for their usual ride to the Pacific Coast and down the coast to Huntington Beach.  The morning was cool but had too much marine layer which limited the view of the coast line.  We had breakfast at the Sugar Shack and then cycled back to our starting points along the same route.  You can view the details of todays ride by clicking on the link below:

Ambrosia by wildwes49

August 14, 2011

Sunday, 14 August 2011:  Starting from Norwalk, CA, I rode to Liberty Park in Cypress where I met with 3 other riders for today’s ride.  We headed west on South St until we got to the LA River Trail.  We then took the river trail south to the coast, following the coastal bike trail to the lighthouse, around the lighthouse and through Shoreline Village.  We continued on the coastal bike trail to Junipero and then to Broadway where we stopped at Ambrosia Cafe in Long Beach for breakfast.  Ambrosia Cafe has a beautiful tropical setting in the patio that complimented the very scenic ride to and from the restaurant.  On the return trip we went through some nice residential areas including some roads that were right next to golf courses.  As we drew close to the end of the ride we had a short ride through a nature center and then on the San Gabriel River Trail until we arrived back at Liberty Park.  The actual ride was 31 miles but because I rode a few miles before and after the ride, my total distance was almost 38 miles.  The ride was mostly flat and the weather was fairly cool.  You can view the details of today’s ride by clicking on the link below:

Newport Coast Short by wildwes49

August 14, 2011

Saturday, 13 August 2011:  I began my ride today from Norwalk, CA and met 7 other riders from my bike club at Liberty Park in Cypress.  We went down the San Gabriel River Trail to Pacific Coast Hwy and then headed south to Newport Beach.  In Newport Beach we rode up Marguerite to San Joaquin Hills.  We took San Joaquin to Back Bay and went the long, scenic way around the bay.  After going around the bay, we returned to Pacific Coast Hwy to begin our return trip.  We stopped at Newport Burger at about 40 miles into our ride.  After we ate, it was only another 20 miles until we arrived back at Liberty Park.  The total ride today was about 60 miles not including my ride to and from Liberty Park.  Marguerite was our only real climb today and the total elevation gain for the ride was about 900 feet.  It was a cool day for a ride and everyone seemed to enjoy it.  You can click on the link below to view the details of today’s ride.
